OS v0.6.6 is now available, monthly subscriptions and a historic 3D-printed rocket launch.

👋 Hello from PrintNanny.ai (the personal assistant for your 3D printer). March has flown by, with our HQ in California experiencing historic flooding and power outages.

But neither rain nor snow nor gloom of night could stop PrintNanny OS v0.6.6 from landing, packed with bug fixes and improvements. Thank you to everyone who reported issues!

The Golden State was hit by two successive atmospheric rivers in March 2023, with some regions of the Bay Area receiving 5 to 13 in (13 to 33 cm) of rain in two days. Image credit: San Francisco Chronicle

Relativity Space Launched the World’s First 3D Printed Rocket.

The Terran 1 rocket achieved breakthroughs in methane-fueled and 3D-printed spacecraft design:

  • First methane-fueled rocket in the West to reach space, past the 100km Karman Line.
  • First nearly-entirely 3D printed rocket (85% by mass) to fly and prove 3D printing is viable by passing Max-Q, the max stress on the rocket.
  • First methane orbital-class rocket to successfully complete stage 1 flight, main engine cutoff, and second stage separation in the West.
  • First-ever second-stage ignition attempt during the vacuum of flight for a methane-fueled orbital rocket in the West, collected first-ever flight data.

United States Department of Energy (DOE) announces $30 million funding opportunity for wind turbines produced with additive manufacturing

The DOE is currently reviewing concept papers covering the following areas:

  1. Large Wind Blade Additive Manufacturing
This topic seeks projects that build on existing polymer-based AM research that supports and advances more cost-effective large wind turbine blades.
  2. Additive Manufacturing of Non-Blade Wind Turbine Components
This topic seeks innovative additive manufacturing solutions for lower-cost, higher-performance non-blade wind turbine system components.
  3. Large Wind Blades — Advanced Manufacturing, Materials, and Sustainability
This topic is comprised of four areas of interest: Automation, Digitalization, Sustainability, and Modular Blade Construction/Joining

These topics are part of a broader investment in clean energy and energy self-sufficiency in the United States.

The improved materials and manufacturing processes envisioned under this funding opportunity have the potential to reduce wind energy costs and expand the deployment of the nation’s wind energy portfolio in support of President Biden’s goals to reach 100% clean electricity by 2035 and a net-zero-emissions economy by 2050.
